The Emerging Tech Lab (ETL) at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center (RLANRC) was established in 2014 by rehabilitation engineer Andy E. Lin to evaluate, modify, and implement emerging and experimental technologies in their use with individuals with disabilities, specifically for patients at the facility. The ETL has become the hub at Rancho for new ideas related to assistive tech, as well as a creative outlet for clinical staff and engineers to think outside the box in what can be created for patients. The ETL was initially established with financial support through the Rancho Foundation and is exploring ways to further expand the program.

RLANRC is a world-renowned hospital that provides specialty rehabilitative care to individuals who have suffered from spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and other neurological disorders. As one of the largest rehabilitation hospitals in the United States, RLANRC cares for approximately 4,000 inpatients each year, and services 71,000 outpatient visits each year.

Design and Rapid Prototyping of Assistive Technology

Clinical therapy staff and patients consult with engineers in the lab to design and cultivate innovation in the fields of rehabilitation and assistive technology. FDM and SLA 3d printers are utilized to produce functional prototypes for patient testing and use.
